 Course Overview

This course is designed for individuals who require the knowledge and practical skills to safely operate an ATV

3 Options

  • All Terrain Vehicle – Sit Astride (N608a)
    • These are traditional 4-wheeled or 6-wheeled quad bikes or all-terrain cycles.
  • All Terrain Vehicle – Sit In (N608b)
    • Also known as side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) or Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs). These have seats for the operator and passenger side-by-side, usually with a steering wheel, foot pedals, and a rollover protective structure (roof/cage)
  • All Terrain Vehicle – Multi Drive (N608c)
    • Specialized, often articulated, tracked or multi-wheeled vehicles designed for extreme terrain, such as Argo CATs or Hagglund-type machines

Course Objectives
Participants will develop competency in the following areas:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for all-terrain vehicle use
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Prepare the all-terrain vehicle for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
  • Attach and set trailer implements ready for operation
  • Environmental considerations
  • Storage and transport of implements and attachments
  • Load and unload from a transport vehicle or trailer correctly
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Entry Requirements

Good understanding of spoken and written English.

Card options*

NPORS Traditional Operator Card (Non-CSCS)
  • Best for operators working in non-construction sectors where a CSCS logo card is not required.
  • We standardly issue cards for 3 years but can issue cards for 5 years on request
  • Companies can choose to have the cards restricted to just for their company use on request
NPORS/CSCS Card Route (Construction)
  • For operators working on construction sites where a CSCS logo card is required.
  • You will need a valid NPORS or CITB HS&E touchscreen test dated within 2 years of application
NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operator Card (2 years)
  • For operators who do not yet hold the required (S)NVQ.
  • You will need a valid NPORS or CITB HS&E touchscreen test dated within 2 years of application
  • During the 2-year card period you must:
    • Register for and achieve the required (S)NVQ before renewal/upgrade
NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator Card (5 years)
  • For operators who already hold the required (S)NVQ
  • You will need a valid NPORS or CITB HS&E touchscreen test dated within 2 years of application
  • The required (S)NVQ for the category
