Manual handling is a major cause of workplace strains, sprains and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This one-day RoSPA Level 2 Award gives your team the knowledge and practical skills to move and handle loads safely, using good posture, efficient movement and the right controls.

It’s ideal for organisations that want a recognised standard of training and a clear focus on safe, real-world techniques.

What the course covers

The qualification is split into two units.

Unit 1 – Safe moving and handling in the workplace

  • Injuries and ill health linked to poor manual handling
  • Manual handling hazards and risks, including the importance of risk assessment
  • Efficient movement principles: good posture and body mechanics
  • Health & safety legislation and consequences of non-compliance
  • Principles of risk control for manual handling tasks
  • Manual handling equipment and safe use of lifting/handling aids

Unit 2 – Safe manual handling practices

  • Demonstrate efficient and safe techniques, including pre-transfer assessments
  • Requirements for the safe use of handling/lifting equipment (testing, servicing, examination)
  • Types of equipment used for manual handling tasks and when to use them
  • Team handling: safe practice when lifting/moving with others
